Hans Peter Doskozil (born June 21, 1970 in Vorau , Styria ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). He is governor of Burgenland and party chairman of the SPÖ Burgenland .

From December 21, 2017 to February 28, 2019, he was Burgenland's regional councilor for culture, infrastructure and finance in the Niessl IV regional government . From January 26, 2016 to December 18, 2017, he was Federal Minister for National Defense and Sport in the federal governments of Faymann II and Kern . Before that, he was the regional police director in Burgenland.

Career

Doskozil did his basic military service in 1989 with Landwehr Trunk Regiment 13 (now Jägerbataillon 19) and in the same year joined the Federal Police Directorate in Vienna as a security guard . After several years of service as a classified civil servant, he completed his training as a service manager. Doskozil studied part-time law , in November 2000 spondierte it to Mag. Iur. In 2003 he was assigned to the Burgenland Security Directorate (SID), and in 2004 he switched to legal service in the Aliens Police Office of the Federal Police Directorate (BPD) Vienna. In the same year he moved to the Federal Ministry of the Interior . In 2005 Doskozil was transferred to SID Burgenland. In November 2008 he started working in the office of Burgenland Governor Hans Niessl , which he also headed from September 2010. On September 1, 2012 Doskozil returned to the police service as the first state police director of the Burgenland state police department.

In the course of reporting on the refugee tragedy near Parndorf , Doskozil was praised for his crisis management.

Political commitment

Doskozil was a councilor for the SPÖ in his home municipality Grafenschachen . As a result of the refugee crisis in 2015 and his crisis management as state police director in Burgenland at the Nickelsdorf border crossing , he was soon traded in the media for higher offices. On January 26, 2016, he was sworn in as Minister of Defense .

In 2015 Doskozil stood for the welcoming culture and regulated the situation in Nickelsdorf (Burgenland border crossing Austria / Hungary) insofar as the refugees were registered and accepted on the one hand and on the other hand they could travel to Germany. Today Hans Peter Doskozil stands for closed borders and the end of the Mediterranean route .

During his tenure, the budget for the armed forces, which had halved as a percentage of GDP between 1985 and 2015, was increased. Half a billion euros are to flow into the army infrastructure by 2020. After this budget increase, the number of people interested in the job of a professional soldier doubled in 2017.

In February 2017 Doskozil filed a complaint against Airbus Defense and Space GmbH. Airbus is suspected of having deceived the Republic of Austria both about the purchase price and the ability to deliver when buying Typhoon interceptors. The Republic of Austria therefore claimed damages from Airbus. A second Eurofighter Committee of Inquiry was decided in March and started work in May 2017. In this context, the contract between Airbus and the Republic of 2007 was examined, in which a reduction from 18 to 15 Eurofighters, six of which were used, was decided. The second part of the Eurofighter affair was the counter- deals with a volume of 3.5 billion euros, which were contractually agreed upon when the Eurofighter was purchased. In 2002, the "Eurofighter Typhoon" aircraft was given priority over the second-placed Saab Gripen . Based on the results of a special commission for airspace security, Doskozil announced at the end of the U-Committee in July 2017 that the Armed Forces' Eurofighters and Saab 105 would be replaced. The acquisition of F-16 multi-purpose combat aircraft or the Saab Gripen was discussed .

In December 2017 Doskozil became regional councilor in the Burgenland state government. He took over the areas of finance, culture and infrastructure from Helmut Bieler , who was retiring. As SPÖ district chairman in the Oberwart district , he also succeeded Helmut Bieler in 2018.

On September 8, 2018, at the state party conference of the SPÖ Burgenland , Hans Peter Doskozil was elected as the new state party chairman and thus Hans Niessl's successor with 98.4 percent of the votes . On 28 February 2019 he took over the state government Doskozil I , the office of the Burgenland Provincial Governor .

At the end of December 2018, Doskozil spoke out in favor of direct election of the provincial governors. Similar to the mayors, this could lead to a “very honest form of politics”.

After the state elections in 2020 , he was elected governor of the state government Doskozil II on February 17, 2020 by the Burgenland state parliament with 35 of 36 votes.

Political orientation and review

Doskozil differentiates itself from the Federal Association of the SPÖ with many political positions and is associated with a shift to the right within the party. In particular, because of Doskozil's openness to a red-blue coalition with the FPÖ , there were clashes among the Social Democrats. Even after the Ibiza affair , Doskozil declared in September 2019: "I know what red-blue we have in Burgenland". With regard to a red-blue coalition at the federal level, he also stated that the SPÖ was “not ready for this step.” Political advisor Thomas Hofer said in January 2020 that Doskozil would have a “hard line of migration” for a “mixture of legal and Left populism ”.

Private

Doskozil is divorced and has two children. His brother is a policeman with the Vienna police. Since 2019 he has been in a relationship with Julia Jurtschak, who is 13 years his junior, who was originally appointed as a consultant in his office in February 2020, she was supposed to plan and develop social markets in all districts. Due to negative reactions, including from NEOS and ÖVP, she did not accept the post.

In 2018 he had to undergo surgery on his vocal cords for the first time due to persistent hoarseness. In autumn 2019 he announced that he would take a two-week break to have another operation on his vocal cords.
