Life

Tanner grew up in Perwarth and attended the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium Scheibbs and then studied law at the University of Vienna until 1995 . From 1995 to 1996 she completed her legal practice at the District Court of Liesing and the Vienna Regional Court for civil law matters . She then worked from 1996 to 2001 as a legal and social assistant at the Lower Austrian Farmers' Union. In 2001 she moved to the cabinet of Interior Minister Ernst Strasser . From 2003 she worked in "Cooperation Management" at Kapsch BusinessCom , where she was responsible, among other things, for "relationship management between the company and decision-makers in politics and business".

In November 2010, Tanner returned as a (initially designated) director of the Lower Austrian Farmers' Union. She was in office from January 2011. At the state party conference of the ÖVP Lower Austria in March 2017, she was elected as one of the deputies of state party leader Johanna Mikl-Leitner with 96.9 percent of the delegate's votes. In addition, from 2010 to 2015 she was an ÖVP councilor in Gresten (Scheibbs district) and a member of the regional party arbitration court.

She was repeatedly mentioned in the media as a possible candidate for high-ranking political offices, for example as ÖVP state manager, member of the state or federal government. In November 2017, the daily newspaper Die Presse reported in the course of the coalition negotiations between ÖVP and FPÖ that Tanner was ÖVP boss Sebastian Kurz's “preferred candidate” for the office of defense minister in the future government. She would have been the first woman in this position. Nevertheless, Tanner was not ÖVP member of the government in the federal government short-I .

From March 22, 2018 to January 7, 2020 she was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament . With her inauguration by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen , Tanner became the first female defense minister in the history of Austria. As director of the Lower Austrian Farmers' Union, she was succeeded in January 2020 by her deputy Paul Nemecek. Your state parliament mandate went to Waltraud Ungersböck . Tanner appointed Major General Rudolf Striedinger as Chief of Staff in January 2020 , and Dieter Kandlhofer became Secretary General . She has appointed Roman Markhart and Herbert Kullnig as her press officers.

In the course of the corona crisis , Tanner initiated the first partial mobilization of the militia in the history of the Second Republic.

Klaudia Tanner is sister-in-law of ÖVP politician Stefan Steiner .
