Gernot Blümel (born October 24, 1981 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). Since January 7, 2020 he has been Federal Minister of Finance in the Federal Government Brief II . From October 23, 2019 to January 7, 2020 he was a member of the National Council , and has been the regional party chairman of the ÖVP Vienna since 2015 .

From 2008 to 2010 he was Vice President of the Young European People's Party (YEPP) . From 2013 to 2015 he was ÖVP General Secretary. From December 18, 2017 to May 28, 2019, he was Minister of the Chancellery , responsible for EU, art, culture and media, in the Federal Government Kurz I and, as such, Chairman of the Austrian EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2018 .

Life

After primary school in his hometown of Moosbrunn in Lower Austria, he attended the Don Bosco Salesians' grammar school in Unterwaltersdorf , where he graduated from high school in 2000 . After completing military service in the Austrian Armed Forces, he studied philosophy at the University of Vienna and the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon (France) and graduated in 2009 with the academic degree Mag. Phil. from. He then studied at the Executive Academy of the Vienna University of Economics and Business and graduated with the academic degree Master of Business Administration .

He is a member of the Catholic student union KaV Norica Vienna . He has been in a relationship with the journalist, presenter and spokesperson Clivia Treidl (* 1986) since 2014 . On March 2, 2020, the couple became parents of a daughter.

Blümel began his political career in the Young People's Party (JVP). As the international secretary of the JVP, he has been a member of the JVP's national board since 2006. From 2006 to 2008 Blümel was active in the National Council, first as a parliamentary employee and then in the office of the Second President of the National Council Michael Spindelegger (ÖVP). From 2009 Blümel was a consultant in the cabinet of the Federal Minister in the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs . He was also Vice President of the Young European People's Party (YEPP) from 2008 to 2010. In June 2011, Blümel was entrusted with the areas of ministerial coordination and government work in the Vice Chancellor's cabinet.

In the election to the European Parliament on May 25, 2014, Blümel was the campaign manager of the ÖVP.

General Secretary and media spokesman for the ÖVP

On December 6, 2013, the federal party executive of the ÖVP appointed Blümel as general secretary. In this function he succeeded the Tyrolean Hannes Rauch . After Michael Spindelegger resigned from all functions on September 26, 2014, Blümel was confirmed as General Secretary by the new party chairman- designate Reinhold Mitterlehner at the meeting of the Federal Party Executive Committee.

With “Evolution People's Party”, Blümel, as Secretary General, initiated a process for the further development of the ÖVP, which, according to the ÖVP, also gave non-members the opportunity to bring in their ideas and suggestions for a new party program. At the party congress on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the ÖVP in spring 2015, a renewed ÖVP basic program was resolved. In October 2015 he became regional party chairman of the ÖVP Vienna; Peter McDonald was his successor as Secretary General of the Federal ÖVP.

Blümel was also the media spokesman for the ÖVP in the parliamentary club from December 17, 2013 to October 2015. In this function, on July 31, 2014, he presented the media package “More program for Austria”. In it, Blümel formulated central demands, taking into account the independence and diversity of the Austrian media and dual broadcasting in Austria, in order to bring more media added value back to Austria and to broadcast more Austrian content. He also called for an ancillary copyright to protect journalistic content and intellectual property on the web. He prioritized a European solution over a national one.

State party chairman in Vienna

On October 12, 2015, Blümel was appointed to succeed Manfred Juraczka, who resigned as regional party chairman of the Vienna ÖVP after heavy losses in the state and municipal council elections on the evening of the election .

In the state government and city senate of Häupl VI , he was not the executive city councilor from November 2015; Markus Wölbitsch succeeded him in this position on January 25, 2018 .

In addition to Sebastian Kurz , Elisabeth Köstinger , Stefan Steiner and Bettina Glatz-Kremsner , he was a member of the ÖVP steering group in the course of the formation of the government after the 2017 National Council election .

Federal Minister of the Kurz government

On December 18, 2017, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen swore Blümel as Federal Minister for Art, Culture, the Constitution and the Media . After the changes in responsibilities in some ministries by the new Kurz I government , he was sworn in as Federal Minister in the Federal Chancellery for EU, Art, Culture and Media on January 8, 2018 . He then held this office in the provisional federal government of Löger . In this function, Blümel appeared as a proponent of the upload filters provided for in Article 13 of the European Union 's copyright reform. His term of office as Minister of the Chancellery ended on June 3, 2019.

In the Federal Government Short II he has been Federal Minister of Finance since January 7, 2020. Romana ceilingbacher took over his seat on the National Council .
