Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek (born Gabriele Hosek on December 16, 1961 in Guntramsdorf ) is an Austrian teacher and politician ( SPÖ ).

She was a member of the National Council and then became Regional Councilor for Health, Social Affairs and Youth Welfare in Lower Austria . On December 2, 2008, she was sworn in as Federal Minister without a portfolio , and from December 18, 2008 to December 2013, she was Minister for Women and the Public Service in the Federal Chancellery.

On December 16, 2013 she was sworn in as Federal Minister for Education, Art and Culture of the federal government Faymann II ; the department has been called the Federal Ministry for Education and Women since March 1, 2014 . She held this function until May 18, 2016 (see Federal Government Kern ), when she was not accepted into his government team by the new Federal Chancellor, Christian Kern , who was sworn in on May 17 . Since June 21, 2009 she has been the women's chairwoman of the SPÖ. Heinisch-Hosek is married to Walter Heinisch, who was the head of the office in Guntramsdorf, where they were born and where they lived.

education and profession

Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek attended elementary and secondary school in Guntramsdorf from 1968 to 1976 and then moved to the upper level secondary school, where she passed her Matura in 1980. Heinisch-Hosek then graduated from the Pedagogical Academy in Baden near Vienna and in 1983 passed the teaching examination for secondary schools (German and art education). In 1992, she also passed the teaching examination for special schools for the hard of hearing and the deaf.

After her training, Heinisch-Hosek worked from 1983 to 1984 at the Vienna toy box and at the adult education center in Mödling . From 1985 to 2002 she was a teacher at the School for the Hard of Hearing in Vienna.

Heinisch-Hosek was a member of the municipal council of the market town of Guntramsdorf between 1990 and 1995 and a managing member of the municipal council from 1995 to 2008. On October 29, 1999 she was elected to the National Council. In 2002 she was elected district chairwoman of the SPÖ Mödling and between 2007 and 2008 she was deputy club chairwoman of the social democratic parliamentary group. In addition, Heinisch-Hosek was the SPÖ's women's and equal treatment spokesperson. On April 8, 2008, she resigned from the National Council and moved to the Lower Austrian provincial government as a social and health councilor .

On November 24, 2008, following the coalition negotiations, SPÖ chairman Werner Faymann proposed her as Federal Minister for Women and the Public Service in the Federal Chancellery, and on December 2, 2008, she was sworn in. From December 16, 2013 to February 28, 2014 as Federal Minister for Education, Art and Culture, she held the position of Federal Minister for Education and Women from March 1, 2014 to May 18, 2016.

In her role as Minister for Women, Heinisch-Hosek organized an open house in her ministry on the occasion of the 105th International Women's Day on March 8, 2016, on the current refugee crisis .
