Ernst Kolb (* January 9, 1912 in Lauterach , † 23. September 1978 in Bregenz ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ), instrumental in the reconstruction of the State Opera in Vienna involved and Professor of Heads of State and Administrative Law .

Life

Ernst Kolb grew up in a family of teachers in Lauterach. After attending elementary school in Lauterach and the Cistercian grammar school in Mehrerau , after a few semesters of theology in Brixen, he began studying philosophy and law and political science in Innsbruck , where he received his doctorate in 1936.

He worked in the organization of the commercial economy (Landesgewerbeverband, Kreishandwerkerschaft) and taught at the Federal Trade School in Bregenz. During the time of National Socialism , he worked in a commercial activity at a dairy in Sonthofen in the Allgäu . Towards the end of the war he was called up and joined an artillery unit.

Ernst Kolb died of a viral disease. With his wife Irma (née König) he had two daughters, a son and an adopted son.

Political and professional career

Kolb was in-house counsel for the Federal Chamber of Commerce in the State Economic Office. From December 19, 1945 to November 8, 1949 he was a member of the National Council and from November 8, 1949 to October 29, 1959 a member of the Federal Council .

From February 18, 1948 to January 23, 1952 Ernst Kolb held the post of Minister for Trade and Reconstruction in the government of Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl . In 1951, Kolb achieved the recognition of the trade agreement of 1928 by the United States, which enabled a large part of Austria to be supplied with consumer goods and laid the foundation for reconstruction.

From January 23, 1952 he was Minister of Education , which he remained until October 31, 1954. During this time he partially reversed the decision made by his predecessors Ernst Fischer and Felix Hurdes : The school subject “language of instruction” was renamed “German language of instruction”.

From 1954 to 1959 Kolb was provincial governor of Vorarlberg.

In 1959 Kolb became a full professor for constitutional and administrative law at the University of Innsbruck without habilitation . In the academic year 1967/68 he was the rector of the university .

Others

In 1974 Kolb was appointed President of the Austrian Catholic Day in Vienna.

From 1936 Kolb was a member of the Catholic student association AV Austria Innsbruck .

In 1952 Ernst Kolb was appointed Commander- in-Chief by Cardinal Grand Master Nicola Cardinal Canali as Commander with the Star of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and invested in the collegiate church of Nonnberg in Salzburg on August 25, 1952 . In 1978 Kolb was the first chief commander of the Bregenz commandery.
