Herbert Sausgruber (born July 24, 1946 in Bregenz ) is a former Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) who was governor of the state of Vorarlberg from 1997 to 2011 . Before that, Sausgruber was state councilor from 1989 to 1990 and state governor in the Vorarlberg state government from 1990 to 1997 .

Herbert Sausgruber was born on July 24, 1946 as the son of the chemist Kurt Sausgruber and his wife Luise in the Vorarlberg state capital Bregenz. Sausgruber then grew up in his parents' house in the Lake Constance municipality of Höchst , where he also attended elementary school. Following on from this, he switched to the lower level of the Bregenz Federal High School in Blumenstrasse , where he also attended the upper level and graduated from there . After graduating from high school , Herbert Sausgruber initially enrolled at the Leopold-Franzens University in Innsbruck to study law and Catholic theology , where he dropped out after a year. In 1970 he was in Innsbruck for doctor of law doctorate .

Immediately after completing his studies, Sausgruber did his military service with the 6th Jäger Brigade of the Austrian Armed Forces in Absam and Innsbruck. In 1971 and 1972 he then completed the court year at the Bregenz District Court and the Feldkirch Regional Court . In 1972 he joined the state service, where he first worked in various functions in the district authorities of Bludenz, Feldkirch and Bregenz. At BH Bregenz, he was most recently appointed head of the youth welfare office. From 1975 he worked at the office of the Vorarlberg state government.

Sausgruber has been a member of the Austrian People's Party since 1964, when he first worked in the Young People's Party and then in the Employees' Association. In 1975 Herbert Sausgruber was elected for the first time for the ÖVP as a member of the community council in his home community Höchst. From 1978 to 1986 he was also councilor for finances in Höchst. In the regional elections in Vorarlberg in 1979 he was elected for the first time as a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament, with his first state parliament session as a member taking place on November 20, 1979. As a member of parliament, Sausgruber succeeded Konrad Blank, who was appointed to the state government, in his place. Subsequently, he was from 1981 to 1989 club chairman of the ÖVP parliamentary group in the state parliament. On October 18, 1986, he was also elected regional party leader of the ÖVP Vorarlberg .

Three years later, on October 23, 1989, after the state elections in Vorarlberg in 1989, Governor Martin Purtscher appointed Sausgruber to the Vorarlberg state government as state councilor for the interior, transport policy, traffic law and housing subsidies. One year later, on May 9, 1990, Sausgruber took over the post of governor , as the deputy governor is known in Vorarlberg, from his party colleague Siegfried Gasser , who moved to the office of mayor of Bregenz . As such, he was responsible for the departments of internal affairs, legislation, fire police, aid and rescue services, disaster control and housing subsidies, and from 1994 also financial affairs, asset management and management control. Finally, on April 2, 1997, the members of the Vorarlberg Landtag elected him to succeed Martin Purtscher as the fourth governor of Vorarlberg after the Second World War.

On October 7, 2011, Sausgruber announced that he was planning to step down as governor in early December 2011. In a special session of the Vorarlberg state parliament on December 7, 2011, Sausgruber was finally bid farewell and his successor, the previous governor Markus Wallner , was elected at the same time .

Herbert Sausgruber was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Medal of Merit in 2005 . In addition, by virtue of his office as governor, Sausgruber has been the holder of the gold medal of the state of Vorarlberg since 1997 and an honorary citizen of his home town of Höchst since 2004. In 2008 he was made an honorary senator of the University of Innsbruck. In 2012 he received the Grand Decoration of Honor of the Province of Upper Austria and the Large Decoration of Honor in Gold for services to the Province of Vienna with the star .

Family and private

Herbert Sausgruber is married to Ilga Sausgruber and has two sons and a daughter. He lives in Höchst and is a Roman Catholic .

Sausgruber is a member of the Catholic Middle School Association KMV Kustersberg Bregenz in the MKV . He has been a member of the Catholic student association AKV Tirolia Innsbruck in the ÖKV since his studies .
