The 6th Mountain Brigade (high mountain mobility) is a mountain brigade of the Austrian Armed Forces . In the course of the army reform in 2016 , the 6th Jäger Brigade was disbanded and most of it was transferred to the Mountain Combat Command . This was reversed with the reform of 2019 and the brigade was reformed as the 6th Mountain Brigade with its traditional units.

The 6th Mountain Brigade has all the standard skills of an infantry unit and is also particularly suitable for operations in high mountains and in difficult terrain such as B. built-up area and specialized in extreme environmental conditions. The soldiers are Austria's mountain troops . Their battalions are stationed in Vorarlberg , Carinthia , Tyrol and Salzburg .

The motto of the 6th Jäger Brigade is: "In partnership - professionally - together successful"

With the 2nd hunter company in Landeck and the 2nd hunter company in Spittal an der Drau as well as a pioneer construction company in Salzburg, the brigade has three cadre presence units (KPE) for international operations (KIOP) of which the two hunter companies are also mobile in the mountains.

In the course of the army division in 1956, the 6th Mountain Brigade began operations in August. The association consisted of three hunter battalions, an artillery division and a telegraph, supply and medical company. In the following year, the 5th Company of the Jäger Battalion 22 was renamed the Hochgebirgskompanie; Staff company 6, Panzerjägerkompanie 6 and pack animal company 6 were set up. In 1958, reconnaissance company 6 was set up. In February 1961, the 2nd company of Pioneer Battalion 6 (the "Olympia company") was set up and led directly by the 6th Mountain Brigade. The engineer battalion was never set up. When the Army was organized in 1962, the 6th Mountain Rifle Brigade became the 6th Jäger Brigade. In October the independent companies were combined in the 6th Staff Battalion . The Lienz Jäger Company was subordinated to the 26 Jäger Battalion in Spittal an der Drau . In 1963 the high mountain company was dissolved and joined the training battalion 22 as the 2nd company.

In February 1970, the Lienz garrison was re-integrated into the 6th Jäger Brigade. In 1975 the 23rd Jägerbataillon was subordinated to the Vorarlberg military command, the field ambulance to the Tyrolean military command . The new Jäger Battalion 24 was established in Lienz. The 6th Jäger Brigade was disbanded on July 6, 1978. The command of the brigade was integrated into the Tyrolean military command, the battalions largely became Landwehr tribe regiments .

With the "Heeresgliederung NEU" in 1992 (coming into force in 1994) the new 6th Jägerregiment emerged from the 62nd Landwehr Trunk Regiment and the 21st Jägerbataillon. In the event of mobilization, the regiment becomes the 6th Jägerbrigade (troops suitable for the mountains). The new association consisted of the command, headquarters company, 1st and 2nd hunter companies (all in Absam ), the 3rd hunter company (in Kufstein) and the heavy company (in St. Johann in Tirol ). From the Landwehr trunk regiments 61 and 63, the staff regiment 6 emerged, from the Landwehr trunk regiment 64 the Lienz Jäger Regiment. In 1998, the 6th Staff Regiment became the 6th Staff Battalion (including the High Mountain Company), the 9th Jäger Regiment became the 23rd Jäger Battalion with high mountain range and the Lienz Jäger Regiment became the 24th Jäger Battalion - also mobile in the high mountains. With the newly subordinated Jäger Battalion 15, the brigade received an air transport unit.

In 2002, the 6th Jäger Brigade was placed under the new command of the Land Forces and received Engineer Battalion 2. As a result of the Federal Army reform in 2005, Jäger Battalion 26 and Reconnaissance Battalion 2 joined the brigade, while Jäger Battalion 15 was transferred to the 4th Panzer Grenadier Brigade.

In 2006 the Armed Forces Command was established and the brigade was subordinate to it. The association now consisted of: Command, Staff Battalion 6, Jäger Battalion 23 , 24 , and 26 as well as Pioneer Battalion 2 and Reconnaissance Battalion 2 (which, however, was dissolved in the course of the army reform).

The Staff Battalion 6 lost 2007, the high alpine and the engineer company, but got it an ABC company, and (both in Absam) a training company and a workshop Company (in Innsbruck-Kranebitten).

The pack animal squadrons of Jäger Battalions 23 and 26 were disbanded, and the new pack animal center of Staff Battalion 6 was built in Hochfilzen (since June 24, 2010). The training company of the Salzburg military command became the 3rd company in Jägerbataillon 26 in Tamsweg. The Jägerbataillon 24 received a 3rd company in St. Johann in Tirol , in Lienz the battalion set up a cadre presence unit with company command.

On July 1, 2009, the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion was disbanded. The 6th Mountain Brigade has been working as a partner with the US National Guard from Vermont since 2020 as part of the State Partnership Program (SPP). The foundation stone for the upcoming SPP program was laid in 2019 at the "Edelweiss Raid". Here a group of the Vermont National Guard took part. US Ambassador Trevor Traina was extremely enthusiastic about this international military mountain competition.
