history

The Upper Austria Jäger Battalion was formed in 2005 from the 14th and 16th militia hunter battalions. As many volunteers as possible were to be recruited for the new battalion. After a break of several years, the soldiers of the Jäger Battalion Upper Austria practiced for the first time in 2006. The old connections to Jäger Battalion 15 were used and the training projects were supported by its cadre soldiers. After this first formation exercise, the focus in the work calendar was on tactical training for the militia cadre.

The battalion's second militia exercise, which was actually planned for 2008, was postponed to 2009 and the BMLVS approved its involvement in the "Handwerk 09" exercise . Together with the Upper Austria Military Command, the 4th Panzer Grenadier Brigade and the 13th Panzer Grenadier Battalion , preparations for the "Handwerk 09" exercise began. This was followed by tactical training at platoon and company level in Ried and, as a highlight, training for the hunter battalion on the command simulator at the end of 2008.

During the militia exercise as part of the "Handwerk 09" exercise, the Upper Austria hunter battalion was able to prove itself and prove its capabilities.

assignment

The JgBOÖ is ready for orders in accordance with Article 79 of the Federal Constitutional Law (Bundesverfassungsgesetz).

The task of the battalion in peacetime is to maintain its operational capability through regular exercises.

The training and further education required for this is largely carried out with the Panzer Grenadier Battalion 13, who is responsible for the mob. Through this partnership, the soldiers of the JgBOÖ have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in exercises of the 4th Panzer Grenadier Brigade.

The JgBOÖ practices every other year for about two weeks. In the meantime, the soldiers learn and practice military skills at the cadre and weapons schools of the Austrian Armed Forces and supplement their knowledge in self-study.

Many soldiers of the JgBOÖ complete assistance missions and missions abroad. In addition, batches and NCOs of the JgBOÖ are regularly active as trainers in standing associations.

Armament

The JgB Upper Austria is equipped with the following weapon systems:

Calls

In the summer of 2013, the Jäger Battalion was the first militia association of the 2nd Republic to complete an operation as part of an assistance mission because of the severe flood damage in Upper Austria. The Upper Austria Jägerbataillon provided the people affected by the flood with the necessary help and supported the civilian forces. For this achievement, the soldiers were awarded the medal of the Austrian Armed Forces . As part of a voluntary report, it can also be used for other missions (abroad, in Germany, disasters, etc.).

In the course of the refugee crisis , from January 28, 2016, a whole platoon of the Upper Austria Hunter Battalion stood in Salzburg for four weeks on assistance. After a few militiamen had previously been supporting the KPE units in Austria in dealing with the flow of refugees, this was the first time the militia was deployed in strength to deal with the crisis. Many of the Upper Austrian soldiers were students who used their semester break to gain operational experience.

coat of arms

The shield is split, in front in black a golden, red-tongued and armored eagle, behind a silver band in red, on it in the upper corner a silver edelweiss, at the heart point two black swords crossed with the blade upwards and in the lower corner a silver horn.

meaning

  • The front half resembles the front half of the Upper Austrian coat of arms, which was donated in 1390 by the Habsburg Duke Albrecht for Austria ob der Enns. In the battalion's coat of arms it stands for the territorial affiliation and the battalion name.
  • The rear half contains the red-silver-red Austrian shield and stands for the Republic of Austria and the Austrian Armed Forces.
  • The edelweiss stands for Upper Austrian military tradition. It was donated in 1914 by the commander of the 14th Corps to Archduke Joseph Ferdinand as a corps badge. The corps included the states of Tyrol (with Vorarlberg), Salzburg and Austria on the Enns.
  • The crossed swords represent the soldier, the fight and the military.
  • The signal horn stands for the signaling instrument of the hunters' troops .

Others

The Upper Austrian Jägerbataillon took part in 2013 as the first closed militia unit (battalion level) in the “Flood Assistance Operation” (AssE) in the Upper Austria area.

With a few exceptions, the soldiers of the Upper Austria Jäger Battalion are militiamen who work as civilians in all areas of society. In addition, they are active as militiamen in the Austrian armed forces. The ranks of the JgBOÖ include entrepreneurs, workers, employees, civil servants, freelancers and students. The multitude of civilian occupations that are brought together in the Jäger Battalion increases the ability to improvise and thus increases the effectiveness of the Jäger Battalion.
