The Styrian Jäger Battalion "Archduke Johann" is based in Sankt Michael in Upper Styria . The commandant has been Lieutenant Colonel Markus Mesicek from Graz since October 15, 2018 .

The battalion with the traditional name " Archduke Johann " is the only militia hunter battalion in Styria . It serves the armed forces as a quickly available reserve for domestic tasks of the armed forces and is an essential provider of personnel for missions abroad. The workforce is around 840 soldiers. Since the formation in 2006, ordered weapons exercises (BWÜ) with the constant designation " KREIDFEUER " have been carried out every two years .

The command responsible for mobilization of the Styrian Jäger Battalion was the Styrian Military Command until 2016 , and since then it has been the Jäger Battalion 18 in the Landwehr barracks in St. Michael.

In addition to their civilian duties, the soldiers of the Styrian Jäger Battalion voluntarily undertake to train their military skills in order to participate in the fulfillment of the armed forces' core tasks of "protection and assistance" at home and abroad.

The battalion trains above all the protection of important buildings and facilities as well as the security police assistance. In the event of a disaster, the militiamen are able to provide aid quickly.
