history

The history of a garrison in Straß goes back to the year 1852, when Straß Castle was used as a kuk cadet institute. From 1875 the building was used as barracks for combat units ( artillery , dragoons ), again as an infantry cadet school between 1896 and 1904, and then as a military lower secondary school until the end of the First World War in 1918. During the Second World War , Straß Castle served as a reserve military hospital for the Wehrmacht . Initially under British administration as a refugee camp, a gendarmerie school was installed in the barracks on December 1, 1951 . With the conclusion of the State Treaty in 1955, the Gendarmerie School was converted into the provisional Border Guard Department 3.

The Styrian Feldjäger Battalion No. 17 under Major A. Lohmer was created on May 1, 1956 from the 3rd and 4th subdivisions of this border protection department. In December 1962 the reclassification to Jägerbataillon 17 took place . On 15 May 1967, the castle barracks because of the tradition adopted by Defense was Georg Prader , in Archduke Johann renamed army barracks. In addition, the tradition of the "Styrian Alpine Hunter Regiment Field Marshal Daun No. 9" was taken over.

In January 1979 JgB 17 was transferred to the units of the Landwehr Tribe Regiment 53 (LWSR 53). This was responsible for the material and personnel formation, maintenance and administration of a replacement regiment, a mobile hunter battalion, two Landwehr battalions and seven immediately subordinate companies. Due to the "Army Division NEW" (1992 to 1994), the LWSR 53 was reclassified to the 5th Jägerregiment and the 5th Jägerbrigade.

In 1997 the first Pandur armored personnel carriers were delivered to Straß, making the garrison the first and only fighter unit to be equipped with these vehicles.

In April 1998 the first female volunteers of the armed forces arrived in Straß. In 1999, the first Austrian contingent was set up for use in Kosovo in Straß ( AUCON 1 / KFOR ). In the same year, it was renamed Jägerbataillon 17 and incorporated into the 1st Jäger Brigade .

Since 2004, JgB 17 has provided a hunter company as a cadre presence unit (KPE) for the forces for international operations (KIOP). After the 1st Jäger Brigade was dissolved in 2005, the battalion was incorporated into the 7th Jäger Brigade . On September 30, 2008 the second company was relocated from the Mickl barracks in Bad Radkersburg to Strasbourg. In 2011 the first Austrian participation in an EU battlegroup followed .
