Iveco Light Multirole Vehicle (LMV) ( it. Veicolo Leggero Multiruolo (VLM) ; German light multi-purpose vehicle ) is a military vehicle offered by the Italian manufacturer Iveco since 2004 and manufactured in the Bolzano plant. It was mainly designed for military purposes but also offered for civil purposes, it is used by several armed forces. An improved successor model called the VTLM-2 is being planned. Outwardly, the LMV is similar to the US HMMWV . In Germany, it is offered as Caracal in cooperation with Rheinmetall .

technical description

Iveco LMV in open version of the Italian civil defense

Iveco offers the LMV in two versions: a 4.97 m long transport version ( wheelbase 3.5 m) and a 4.67 m long reconnaissance version (3.2 m). The track width in both cases is 1.72 m (width 2 m), the ground clearance 0.493 m, the height 1.95 m. These dimensions and an empty weight of around 6.5 tons allow air transport in a CH-47  Chinook , in the new AgustaWestland AW101 or in an Alenia C-27J . Thanks to a special procedure, the LMV can also be set down by parachute .

The vehicle is protected against landmines in a special way : the parts of the vehicle that are most at risk in this context have been designed and installed in such a way that they can be blown off in the event of a corresponding hit, without putting the crew, which is usually five people, in greater danger. In addition to this basic protection, there is a light kit against fire from infantry weapons up to caliber 7.62 mm and heavy kits for protection against anti- tank mines with up to 6 kg of explosives and fire from weapons up to caliber 12.7 mm. The special vehicle seats come from the aviation sector and provide additional protection against explosions . The tires have run-flat properties .

Various solutions have been adopted from the field of armored construction in order to reduce the thermal visibility and the reflection of transmitted pulses from radar devices . The vehicle paintwork has radiation-absorbing properties.

The LMV is powered by a silenced IVECO F1D turbo diesel engine with 136 kW (185 PS) and reaches a top speed of over 130 km / h. The achievable fording depth without preparation is 0.7 m, with modifications it is 1.20 m.

The longer transport version can be used as a medical vehicle, command and radio vehicle, NBC detection vehicle , towing vehicle for light field howitzers and also as a weapon carrier, especially for armored and light anti-aircraft missiles MANPADS .

Surname

Shortly after its introduction, the Italian VTLM was given the name Lince (lynx) . This had already been used for an armored reconnaissance vehicle built from 1943 to 1945, which corresponded to the British Daimler Dingo (captured vehicles served as a template). The Lancia company built 263 vehicles, Ansaldo 129. In the last phase of the war, these armored cars were mainly used by the German Wehrmacht and Italian fascist troops. After the war they were taken over by the Reggimento “Lancieri di Aosta” (6º) and the Carabinieri .
