The forces of Chad ( Armée Nationale Tchadienne ) include the armed services army and air forces as well as the Republican Guard . The defense budget (2007) was US $ 56.7 million .

France supports Chad with military equipment and training and has around 800 soldiers in the country.

history

The country gained independence on August 11, 1960. In 1966 the Muslim FROLINAT - Front national de libération du Tchad ("National Liberation Front of Chad") was founded against Christian-Sudist dominance and a civil war began. In 1969 France intervened on the side of President François Tombalbayes . Libya , Algeria and Sudan, on the other hand, supported FROLINAT. 1973 Libya first occupied the Aouzou Strip . A civil war followed with changing alliances. In 1982 N'Djamena was conquered by Hissène Habré . In 1983, Chad was de facto divided into two at the 16th parallel, the Libyan military was present in the north. From 1986 to 1987, however, the Chadian government troops went on the offensive ( Libyan-Chadian border war ).

Habré was overthrown by Idriss Déby in 1990 by the armed opposition of the Mouvement Patriotique du Salut . In 1994 the Aouzou Strip was again awarded to Chad by the International Court of Justice . According to Abu Bakr Yunis Jaber , units of the Republican Guard of Chad fought on the side of the government in the civil war in Libya . These are said to have been led by Issa Taher , Deputy Chief of Security in Chad and close relative of Idriss Déby. In 2013, the armed forces of Chad participated in the Opération Serval to expel Islamist rebels from northern Mali .

Air Force

The air force comprises approx. 350 soldiers and operates u. a. 2 Aermacchi SF-260 , 4 Pilatus PC-6 /7 and 4 Lockheed C-130 . In 2014 the country acquired three MiG-29 fighter jets . However, these are probably not flown by local pilots. Furthermore, the country has Russian combat helicopters type Mi-24 , the u. a. 2008 were used against the rebels invading the capital.

Republican Guard

The Republican Guard comprises around 5,000 men and is considered to be the best-equipped military unit in Chad, which is also supplied with heavy weapons and is considered to be very mobile. The establishment of the guard is said to have been financed with funds from Muammar al-Gaddafi .
