The armed forces of São Tomé and Príncipe ( pt. Forças Armadas de São Tomé e Príncipe , abbreviated to FASTP ) are the military of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe .

General

The military plays an important political role in São Tomé and Príncipe. The military staged four coups (1978, 1988, 1995 and 2003)

There is no conscription. The defense budget was 2005 581.729 US dollars . A restructuring of the country's armed forces was announced in February 2014.

It is divided into the armed forces Army ( Exército ), Coast Guard ( Guarda Costeira , often also referred to as Navy ), Presidential Guard ( Guarda Presidencial ) and National Guard . Air forces are not available.

As handguns are Uzi , MP5 , PPS , SKS , AK-47 , AKM , PK and MG3 used.

For air defense are anti-aircraft guns of the types ZPU-2 , ZPU-4 and SU-23 , the anti-tank weapons systems RPG-7 , SPG-9 and B-10 are available.

The vehicles available are BRDM-1 , BRDM-2 , BTR-60 , Unimog , Daihatsu Delta , Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender .

Coast guard

The coast guard has various western-made patrol boats .
