Even before independence, they had been armed with heavy weapons.

history

After decades of civil war in South Sudan from 1955 to 1972 and again from 1983 to 2005, the autonomous region of South Sudan was formed in 2005. On July 9, 2011, South Sudan gained independence. The declaration of independence was recognized by Sudan on July 8th.

On February 4, 2012, the Sudanese President al-Bashir said that a war between the two states was possible. On February 11, the two states signed a non-aggression pact in Addis Ababa . However, new attacks are reported again and again. The United Nations and the US called for an end to the violence. On April 12, 2012, the Sudanese government announced that it would break off all negotiations with “the enemy” and decided on general mobilization. Since then there have been minor arguments again and again. With the exception of the status of the controversial Abyei, the conflicts have been resolved in recent years .

The unity of the armed forces is however u. a. endangered by the ethnic conflict between Dinka and Nuer . An armed conflict over the political leadership of the country has been taking place in South Sudan since mid-December 2013, the starting point of the unrest being the impending disarmament of members of the Nuer clan in the presidential guard around former Vice President Riek Machar , who was dismissed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit in July would have. In the course of the unrest in South Sudan, negotiations began again with Sudan, in which al-Bashir proposed the formation of joint army units.
