Yambio ( Arabic يامبيو Yāmbiyū ; Alternative spelling Yambiyo ) is the capital of the state of Gbudwe (until 2015 of Western Equatoria ) in South Sudan .

The city is located near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo near the source of the Sue , the source of the Bahr al-Ghazal river .

Yambio has 31,586 inhabitants (2009 calculation). These are mainly azande .

Population development:

year Residents
1973 (census) 6,675
1983 (census) 24,927
2009 (calculation) 31,586

There is a Roman Catholic diocese of Tambura-Yambio . The population of Yambio and the surrounding area is threatened (early 2009) by occasional fighting between hostile ethnic groups and raids by the Lord Resistance Army (LRA).

The place name is derived from Yambio , a chief of the Azande at the end of the 19th century who resisted the British and Belgian conquest of the area. After his death, Yambio's court ( gbanwa ) became the seat of a post of the colonial administration.

During the Second Civil War in South Sudan , Yambio was under the control of the Sudanese government until 1989, after which it was captured by the SPLA rebels . The local Azande were rather reserved about the Dinka- dominated SPLA, many left the city after their arrival.
