history

From 1919 to 1976 the area of what is now the state of Western Equatoria belonged to the province of Equatoria . In 1976, Western Equatoria was split off from the Province of Equatoria as a province within the boundaries of today's state. From 1991 to 1994 the area belonged again to the newly created state of Equatoria / al-Istiwa'iyya, which resembled the province of Equatoria from 1948 to 1976. On February 14, 1994, Western Equatoria was separated again as a state.

In the Second Civil War in South Sudan from 1983 to 2005 , the South Sudanese SPLA rebels captured several cities in Western Equatoria in 1990.

Even after the end of the war, the population is threatened by attacks by the Ugandan Lord’s Resistance Army , which is active here in the border area between South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic . Furthermore, there are conflicts between settled farmers and Ambororo nomads.

In the 2010 gubernatorial elections, the independent candidate Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro won against the candidate of the ruling party SPLM .

administration
