history
From 1919 to 1948 the area of what is now the state of Lakes belonged to the province of Equatoria and from 1948 to 1976 to the province of Bahr al-Ghazal, which was split off from Equatoria in 1948. In 1976 the province of al-Buhairat, which comprised the area of the present-day states of Lakes and Warrap , was split off from the province of Bahr al-Ghazal. From 1991 to 1994 the area belonged again to the newly created state of Bahr al-Ghazal, which resembled the province of Bahr al-Ghazal from 1948 to 1976. On February 14, 1994, Lakes was split off again, but this time as a state and without the territory of Warrap.
From the Second Civil War in South Sudan 1983-2005 Lakes was less affected than other areas. However, even after the war ended, small arms remained widespread and gang raids were occasional. During a disarmament operation in Rumbek in September 2008, SPLA soldiers looted and assaulted civilians.
The 2010 gubernatorial elections were won by the SPLA candidate, Chol Tong Mayay Jang .
