Jonglei ( Arabic جونقلي Junqali , alternative spelling Junqali or Jongli ) is a federal state in South Sudan .

It has an area of ​​122,479 km² and in 2008 had about 370,000 inhabitants. Its capital is Bor .

The ethnic groups in Jonglei include Dinka and Nuer with various subgroups as well as Murle and, on the border with Ethiopia, Anyuak .

The Jonglei Canal is located in Jonglei , construction of which began in 1974 and which came to a standstill from 1983 due to the civil war .

history

From 1919 to 1976 the area of ​​the present state of Jonglei belonged to the province of A'ali an-Nil (Obernil). In 1976, Jonglei was split off from A'ali an-Nil as a province within the boundaries of today's state. From 1991 to 1994 the area of ​​belonged again to the newly created state of A'ali an-Nil, which corresponded in the boundaries of the province of A'ali an-Nil. On February 14, 1994, Jonglei was split off as a state again.

In the first gubernatorial elections in April 2010, Kuol Manyang Juuk , the incumbent governor and official candidate of the ruling SPLM , was declared the winner. The SPLM general George Athor Deng , who ran as an independent candidate, then accused the SPLM of electoral fraud and corruption and started a rebellion.
