Scientific name
Corophiida
Leach , 1814

The corophiida are a partial order of Senticaudata within flea crabs (Amphipoda). They have an elongated body made up mainly of the thorax. The segments of the abdomen are reduced and fused together. This distinguishes them from other sub-orders of the Senticaudata. Before 2013, because of these characteristics, they were even regarded as a separate suborder of the amphipods, after a revision by James K. Lowry and Alan A. Myers they were classified in the suborder Senticaudata, but without changing their internal systematic classification.

Food acquisition

The Corophiida are divided into the groupings Corophiidira and Caprellidira . The distinction between these two groups is mainly based on the difference in food acquisition. According to this, the Coroophiida are said to descend from ancestors who lived on the ground to feed on detritus , the Caprellida from organisms that filtered suspended organic material within the water column. Within the Corophiida there are less specialized superfamilies like the Aoroidea, which eat all kinds of detritus, and specialized ones like the Cheluroidea, which only feed on wood. The Caprellida have forms that climb onto other organisms in order to filter their food from the water flow. The Caprellidira also include the family of the wall lice (Cyamidae), which live as ectoparasites on the skin of whales .

Systematics

The system of Corophiida was revised in 2002 by Alan A. Myers (National University of Ireland) and James K. Lowry (Australian Museum) and now includes 11 superfamilies with 21 families. The eponymous family of the Corophiidae includes the silt crayfish ( Corophium volutator ) and the freshwater tube crayfish ( Chelicorophium curvispinum ) that immigrated from the Pontocaspic region into the rivers of Europe .
