The Somaliland armed forces ( somali : Ciidanka Qaranka ) have around 43,000 professional soldiers who, with the exception of a few officers , receive a monthly wage of US $ 100 . The annual military budget of Somaliland in 2006 was 41 billion Somaliland shillings , which corresponds to about 5.4 million euros . The military is led from the headquarters in Hargeisa . Most of the soldiers of Somaliland are poorly trained. Some soldiers (especially officers) were trained by Ethiopia .

Due to a UN embargo and a lack of international recognition, Somaliland cannot officially acquire weapons. Therefore, Somaliland relies on maintaining the equipment it acquired from Somalia in 1990. Somaliland soldiers were seen wearing SKS carbines and various versions of the AK-47 .

Somaliland maintains BM-21 , BGM-71 TOW , BTR-50 , T-34 and T-55 . 3 armed vehicles were captured by the Khatuma militia , which was confirmed by the Defense Minister of Somaliland. However, he claimed to have brought the vehicles back under control afterwards.

The Navy of Somaliland was established in 2009 due to increasing piracy in the Horn of Africa and equipped by Great Britain . In January 2012, the Navy had a staff of 300 who had completed eight months of training. The navy operates with armed speedboats , pickups and trucks .
