Sanaag ( Arabic سناغ Sanāgh ) is a region ( Gobol-ka ) in northern Somalia . Their capital is Erigabo .

Sanaag is located on the Gulf of Aden and the Sanaag coast is known as the Maakhir Coast . In the administrative division of Somalia before the Somali civil war , the region was divided into the districts of Badhan , Erigabo, El Afweyn (Ceel-Afweyn) and Laasqorey . Since then, membership of the region has been controversial. Both the de facto independent Somaliland and the de facto autonomous state of Puntland include Sanaag in their respective national territory. In the administrative structure of Puntland, but also of Somaliland, there are subdivisions into up to 19 districts.

The western third of Sanaag is inhabited by the Isaaq clan , the other two thirds in the east by Warsangeli and in the south-east by Dhulbahante, two clan families of the Harti- Darod .

Belonging and border dispute

The region is repeatedly the scene of the border dispute between Somaliland and Puntland , but also has an increasing internal share in the conflict.

On July 1, 2007, Warsangeli in Badhan proclaimed Maakhir as the new autonomous republic of Somalia in view of the disputes between Somaliland and Puntland over their area .

After the conflict between the Warsangeli clan and the political forces in Puntland was resolved, the struggle for independence was abandoned. On January 11, 2009, the Maakhir state declared its dissolution by joining Puntland.

In 2012, Dhulbahante proclaimed the Northland State and Khaatumo State of Somalia , which, in addition to areas in the neighboring regions, also lay claim to the part of Sanaag inhabited by their own clan, aiming for autonomy, but also to remain in Somalia.

In addition to belonging to a clan, the SSC (Sool, Sanaag and Ceyn) movement, which has been active for years, plays a larger role, advocating the area remaining in Somalia and rejecting the political direction of Somaliland, which has separated from Somalia and has international recognition as its own State aspires.
