Mudug (Arabic مدق Muduq ) is a region in central Somalia . Its north and west is part of the internationally not recognized Puntland , the southern part is claimed by Galmudug .

The capital of Mudug is Gaalkacyo . Two other important cities in this region are Goldogob and the coastal town of Hobyo . This region borders in the south on the neighboring region Galguduud and in the north on Nugaal . To the west is Ethiopia and to the east is the Indian Ocean .

The people of Mudug belong mainly to the Somali - clans of the Hawiye and Darod on.
