Jubbada Hoose (Sub- Jubba ; Arabic جوبا السفلى, DMG Ǧūbbā as-Suflā ) is a region ( gobolka ) in southern Somalia . Its capital is the port city of Kismayo with more than 256,000 inhabitants.

Jubbada Hoose is located in the extreme south of Somalia, on the border with Kenya . The region is named after the Jubba River , which flows into the Indian Ocean here .

Jubbada Hoose consists of the four districts of Kismaayo, Jamaame, Afmadow and Badhaadhe . Another important city is Jamaame (192,000 inhabitants).

population

Most residents of Lower Juba belong to the Somali - clan of Darod on. In the interior of the country, their subclan, the Ogadeni, are mostly nomadic, while Harti-Darod have settled in the city of Kismaayo. The Somali Bantu ethnic minority lives in the Gosha area on the Jubba River north of Jamaame . The Bajuni , who belong to the Swahili society , live on the coast .

In contrast to large parts of Somalia, sedentary agriculture is relatively widespread here. Near the river, the Bantu mostly only cultivate arable land. In the wider area of the Jubba, agropastoralism is practiced . In the greater part of Jubbada Hoose, between the Jubba valley and the Kenyan border, livestock - with cattle and also camels, sheep and goats - is the predominant livelihood.

history

Until the middle of the 19th century, the inland west of the Jubba was inhabited by Oromo (by the subgroups of the Orma and Borana ), before they were pushed into what is today Kenya by Somali advancing to the southwest.

During the colonial period, today's Jubbada Hoose was first colonized as part of British Kenya. In 1924 it was transferred to Italy as part of the Oltre Giuba colony , and in 1926 it was annexed to Italian Somaliland with the rest of the Oltre Giuba .

During the Somali civil war , the Juba Valley Alliance in particular controlled the region until it was ousted by the Union of Islamic Courts in 2006 . In early 2007, the border areas in Jubbada Hoose were the last refuge for the Union of Islamic Courts, which is why the US bombed targets in the region in January 2007. In 2008, control of the region was split between Islamists and local clans , some of which were loyal to Somalia's interim government .

In 2006 there were floods on the Jubba.
