Bajuni
The Bajuni (own name Wabajuni ; also Italian Bagiuni or German Badschuni written) are an ethnic minority in Somalia, which is largely inhabited by Somali . They are of mixed Arab, Somali, and Bantu - and possibly Malay - ancestry and belong to Swahili society , which is located on the East African coast from southern Somalia to northern Mozambique .
Data on the number of Bajuni range from 3,000–4,000 to 11,000.
The Bajuni live in the extreme south of Somalia around the city of Kismaayo , whose founding is attributed to them, and on the offshore Bajuni Islands . Some also live in Baraawe and Mogadishu . Their language is Kibajuni , a dialect of Swahili . Many also speak the Somali language , most of them Muslim. Many Bajuni make their living from fishing.
Under the rule of Siad Barres , the Bajuni had to join state fishing cooperatives from 1974. These cooperatives were controlled by people from the Somali clans of the Marehan, Majerteen- and Dhulbahante- Darod , who have no fishing tradition themselves, but who thus appropriated boats and other Bajuni equipment. The coast inhabited by the Bajuni was hit by the tsunami on December 26, 2004 .
