Afmadow (also written Afmadoow , Afmadu or Afmaadu ) is a city in southern Somalia in the Jubbada Hoose region . It is the capital of the district of the same name.

Afmadow has about 12,000 inhabitants. By November 2007, it is estimated that the same number of internally displaced people from Mogadishu had entered the city.

Before the Somali immigration in the 19th century, Afmadow was a center of the Warday - Oromo (cf. Tana Orma ). A smallpox epidemic around 1865 weakened the Warday, however, so that Somali from the Darod clan could occupy the area and displace the Warday.

In 2006 Afmadov was under the control of the Union of Islamic Courts . In the further course of the civil war , Hisbul Islam , a splinter group that emerged from the Union, gained control of the city. On November 21, 2009, she withdrew from the approaching al-Shabaab largely without resistance . Thousands of residents fled for fear of fighting. In May 2012 Afmadow was liberated by Kenyan troops.
