Bari (in Somali : Bari , in German "East"; Arabic باري, DMG Bārī ) is a region (Somali: Gobolka ) in northeast Somalia . The capital is Boosaaso , a coastal city in the northwest.

Bari lies directly on the Horn of Africa with Cape Guardafui in the northeast. Bari borders the Gulf of Aden to the north and the Indian Ocean to the east . The neighboring regions are Sanaag and Sool to the west, and Nugaal to the south .

Since its foundation, the region has been claimed and administered by the de facto autonomous state of Puntland . In its administrative division of Puntland, however, only the northern half of the region is referred to as Bari . The southern part is now the independent region of Karkaar with Qardho as the capital.

In the past, the inhabitants lived mainly from fishing. This is also the reason why several cities are right on the coast, such as Bargaal , Qandala , Bender Siyaada , Aluula , Hafun and Bandarbeyla . Inland on the Sool plateau are Qardho and Iskushuban .

The region is mostly from Somaliland - Clan controlled the Majeerteen, a Subclan the Darod . From the middle of the 18th to the end of the 19th century there were sultanates of the Majeerteen here .

Administrative division

Somalia, Bari, Districts 1991

Somalia

In the administrative structure of Somalia under Siad Barre until 1991, before the start of the Somali civil war , the Bari region was divided into the following districts:

After the collapse of the central government, the administrative units dissolved more and more in the chaos of war. The transitional government of Somalia has always adhered to the pre-war division. But that hardly had any real political impact.

Puntland

In the administrative division of Puntland, Bari is divided into the following districts:

The districts of Bandarbeyla and Qardho in the south are now part of the newly formed Karkaar region . The Puntland government declared the Aluula district to be Gardafuul region in April 2013 and divided it into three districts, Aluula , Bargaal and Gumbax .

These structures are not yet firmly established, and in some cases the government's influence in Garoowe is insufficient for practical implementation on site. Local clan leaders repeatedly called for resistance or founded their own autonomous states. For example, Karkaar is no longer seen by some as a region of Puntland, but as a separate part of Somalia, as is Ras Caseyr in the north, which was proclaimed in the area of the former Aluula district (now Gardafuul).
