The Sool Plateau is located in northeast Somalia (or Somaliland and Puntland ) in the regions of Sanaag , Sool and Bari .

Over 40% of the plateau is in the Bari region, 35% in Sanaag and the remainder in Sool. About 150,000 people live in the area, 85–90% of whom are ranchers and 10–15% are urban residents. Places on the Sool plateau include a. Qardho , Hingalol (Xingalool) and Dhahar .

The vegetation of the Sool plateau ranges from bushy woodland to pasture plants, the plateau has good grazing land. Traditionally, cattle were only grazed here in the rainy season due to the low water table and the lack of year-round surface water. However, over the past two decades, numerous new wells ( berkads ) have been drilled for the growing population and livestock, increasing the availability of water. The Sool plateau is now grazed with goats, sheep and camels all year round. The number of permanent settlements has increased. Deforestation for the sale of charcoal has also increased significantly. In 1988–2003, an estimated 52% of the forests on the plateau were lost.

Droughts and desertification pose difficulties for the region's economy.
