Bandarbeyla ( Somali : Bandar Beyla, Bender Bayla, Bender Beila, Bender Beyla or just Beyla ) is a small town in northeast Somalia , in the Bari region . It is located in the Horn of Africa on the coast of the Indian Ocean and has around 3,400 inhabitants, the majority from the Somali clan of the Majerteen- Darod .
history
The district got its current borders in 1962 under the Somali President Abdirashid Ali Shermarke , who was born in Bandarbayla. After the outbreak of the Somali civil war and the progressive disintegration of the state order in Somalia, Bandarbeyla served as a base for pirates for some time. The city was badly hit by the tsunami that followed the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake . According to the population, the tidal wave destroyed over 60 boats and 100 families were left homeless.
Economy and Infrastructure
Today the settlement with a rather village character lives mainly from fishing. To a lesser extent, there is also trade with Yemen , which can be reached by boat across the Arabian Sea . As the administrative center of the district of the same name, Bandarbeyla has a medical center, which was opened in 2006 with the support of the UNHCR and the children's rights organization Save the Children .
In addition, Bandarbeyla has two schools, the Al-Rashid Primary School , which was set up under Siad Barre in 1975, and the Bayla intermediate school, which is more recent.
There is a functioning water supply with a pipeline system and nine wells in the city, but no public electricity supply. Two private companies offer electricity generated by generators for three hours a day each. Since a generator donated by UNICEF was damaged, the entire district has been in the dark at night.
