Badhan or Baran ( Somali : Badhan ; Arabic برن Baran ) refers to a city and a district in the northeast of Somalia , in the region of Sanaag .

The city has grown significantly since 1991, when the Somali civil war began . The major neighborhoods are Horseed , Iftin , Furqan and Nour . The number of inhabitants is estimated at 7200, but according to other sources also up to 120,000. There is a hospital and several schools. A university is currently under construction.

Between July 2007 and January 2009 Badhan was the capital of the so-called Maakhir . A state founded by local clan leaders from the majority of the population of the Warsangeli, a clan family of the Harti- Darod , which, however, after a short time joined the Puntland , which has been de facto autonomous since 1998 .

Fatima Jibrell , the founder of the non-governmental organization Horn Relief (now Adeso), lived and worked in Badhan for several years and her organization has an office there to this day.

history

The city is around 150 years old and began with the settlement of Hubeera, which, due to its low location, was repeatedly exposed to the risk of flooding in the rainy season. It was therefore relocated around 40 years ago and took the name of the Badhan drilling site at the new location .

The first settlements were established by shepherds of the Warsangeli clan in the 14th century, who found water for their flocks here. Several times the city was a theater of war between troops of the then Warsangeli Sultanate and the dervish movement under Mohammed Abdullah Hassan , who had a larger fortification built in the city.

Local politics

Women from the Badhan District Council

In the presence of the Council of Elders and the Minister of the Interior of Puntland, Abdullahi Ahmed Jama 'Ilkajir', new representatives for the district were elected on March 20, 2011. District Commissioner was Mr. Abdirizak Ahmed Isse, as deputy commissioner Ms Zainab Abdi Mohamed.

Among the electoral winners there was an unusually high proportion of women for Somalia, so that, in addition to the position of deputy commissioner, they will take up 10 of the 28 seats allocated for the district until the next election .

Traditionally, the district administration in Somalia has had a very strong position in resolving local issues. Since the outbreak of the civil war in 1991 and with the disintegration of the central state administration, however, the possibilities to exert influence have only been limited.

traffic

Geeldora Road

Located in the center of the Saanag region, both the road from Boosaaso to Erigavo and the road from Laasqorey to the Sool region and Las Anod run through the city .

The Geeldora Road leads towards the historical town of Laasqorey, approx. 95 km away . Like the other roads, it is unpaved, in poor condition and leads through rough terrain. The local population has only a very small number of motor vehicles.

In the city center there is a 2 km long and 65 m wide runway after oil companies needed a landing pad in the region in the 1980s when they were looking for oil. The facility has not been used as an airport for years, so that the runway is now overgrown by grass or washed out by rain.

care

Badhan has the largest hospital in the Sanaag region. However, it had to be closed in 2009 due to a lack of funding, so that the sick and injured are currently only poorly supplied via the pharmacies in the city, which offer at least simple medical help, or have to be brought to Bosaso in the Bari region .

Economy and communication

Badhan is considered a relatively safe haven during the civil war. In this environment and due to the central location, a successful market for fresh milk, meat and vegetables grown in the area could develop.

In addition to numerous guest houses, there has also been a three-story hotel since 2009, built by a local businessman from Cardiff , United Kingdom . In the city center there are internet cafes and a number of coffee shops where khat is chewed.

Badhan has a modern telephone infrastructure from the local provider Golis Telecom , so that in addition to landlines, cell phones and Internet access are now commonplace in local cafes.
