Las Anod or Lasanod (Somali spelling: Laascaanood ) is a city in northern Somalia with a population of 47,700 according to calculations. It is the capital of the Sool region , which is claimed by both the de facto independent Somaliland and the autonomous states of Puntland and Khaatumo .
With the help of money transfers from Somalis living abroad, Las Anod, like other cities in Northern Somalia, was (re) built, schools and hospitals were built.
Since 2003 Las Anod has been under the control of Puntland. In October 2007 Somaliland recaptured the city after heavy fighting, displacing around 20,000 people. During the subsequent visit by Somaliland ministers, parts of the population protested. There are efforts in Puntland to retake Las Anod.
Currently (source from August 13, 2011) there is a Somaliland armed forces base in Las Anod .
