Abdi Bile

Abdi Bile ( Abdi Bile Abdi , Somali Cabdi Bile Cabdi ; born December 28, 1962 in Las Anod ) is a former Somali middle-distance runner who became Somalia's first ever world champion in a sport in 1987.

Abdi was born as the first of 15 children of the nomad Bile Abdi from the area of ​​Las Anod and grew up with his siblings with his uncle Mohammed Abdi, a police officer, in the city of Las Anod. As a teenager he played soccer .

His running talent was discovered when he was 18 years old. In 1983 he went to the United States , where he began studying at George Mason University and was trained by John Cook.

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he came over 800 meters into the quarter-finals and over 1500 meters into the semi-finals.

He achieved his greatest success at the World Championships in Rome in 1987 , where he won gold in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3: 36.80 minutes.

Due to injuries, he missed qualifications for the 1988 Olympic Games , the 1991 World Championships and the 1992 Olympic Games .

At the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart , he won bronze over 1500 meters in 3: 35.96 minutes and was eliminated over 800 meters in the preliminary run. 1995 in Gothenburg failed over 1500 meters in the run, and at the end of his career he finished sixth at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta in 3: 38.03 min.

Abdi Bile is 1.85 m tall and weighed 75 kg during his active career. He has a degree in Marketing Management and returned to Somalia in 2008 after living in the United States for 19 years to coach the Athletics Federation in his civil war-torn homeland. He comes from the same clan as the American long-distance runner Abdihakem Abdirahman .
