Complete medal table |
The 2nd World Athletics Championships took place from August 28 to September 6, 1987 in the Italian capital Rome . With the exception of the marathons and the walking competitions , the competitions were held in the Olympic Stadium in 1960 . 1741 athletes from 157 countries took part.
Competitions
The women’s 10 km walk and 10,000 meter run have been added to the world championship program. For the first time, a walking competition was added to the competition calendar for women , the length of which was increased in 1999 to the 20 kilometers that had long been the norm for men. There were now three long distances for women and men , the shorter one over 3000 meters for women and 5000 meters for men . That changed in 1995 when the distance for women was adjusted to match the men's program. The 10,000-meter and marathon races were offered for both sexes in the same form from 1987 onwards.
Athletic performance
The second edition of the World Athletics Championships was also characterized by a high level of performance.
- There were two world records:
- 100 meter men - Carl Lewis ( USA ): 9.93 s (equalization of the record of Calvin Smith from 1983)
- High jump women - Stefka Kostadinowa ( Bulgaria ): 2.09 m
- Seven continental records have been set:
- 400 meters men - Thomas Schönlebe ( GDR ): European record in 44.33 s
- 400 meter hurdles men - Harald Schmid ( BR Germany ): European record (equalized) in 47.48 s
- 4 × 100 m men - Soviet Union in the line-up of Alexandr Evgenjew , Wiktor Bryshin , Vladimir Muravyov , Vladimir Krylov : European record in 38.02 s
- 4 × 400 m men - Great Britain in the line-up Derek Redmond , Kriss Akabusi , Roger Black , Philip Brown : European record in 2: 58.86 min
- Triple jump men - Christo Markow ( Bulgaria ): European record with 17.92 m
- 800 meters women - Ana Fidelia Quirot (Cuba): America record in 1: 55.85 min
- Heptathlon women - Zhu Yuqing ( People's Republic of China ): Asian record in 6211 p
- There were also four national records:
- 10,000 meters men - Spyros Andriopoulos ( Greece ): Greek record in 28: 07.17 min
- 4 × 400 m men - Cuba with Leandro Peñalver , Agustin Pavó , Lázaro Martínez , Roberto Hernández : Cuban record in 2: 59.16 minutes
- 4 × 400 m men - BR Germany with the cast Norbert Dobeleit , Mark Henrich , Edgar Itt , Harald Schmid : German record in 2: 59.96 min
- 800 meters women - Sigrun Wodars (GDR): GDR record in 1: 55.26 min
- In addition, 37 world championship records were set in 35 disciplines.
doping
There were three retrospectively determined doping cases with disqualifications of the athletes concerned:
- Ben Johnson ( Canada ) - 100 meters , initially first in world record time / 4 × 100 m , initially fourth in the Canadian relay. Johnson tested positive for stanozolol three days after his 1988 Olympic victory and had to give up his gold medal. His results at these world championships were also canceled because he admitted that he had previously violated the doping regulations. He was initially banned for two years, but had to accept a lifelong ban after his return to competitive sport because a doping violation was proven again.
- Angella Issajenko , former Angella Taylor (Canada) - 100 meters, initially fifth / 4 × 100 m , initially in sixth place. Angella Issajenko was involved in the Ben Johnson doping case. She belonged to the same training group as Johnson under Charlie Francis. The doctor responsible for the doping preparations George Astaphan was responsible for Issajenko as well as for Johnson. After Ben Johnson was convicted of the doping offense, Issajenko exposed numerous doping practices and admitted that she had also doped herself. She then received a suspension, among other things, her results achieved at these world championships were canceled.
- Sandra Gasser ( Switzerland ) - 1500 meters , initially third. Your doping sample submitted after the World Cup race tested positive for testosterone . She had to surrender her medal and was banned for two years.

With his last jump - measured at 8.38 m - Giovanni Evangelisti first took the bronze place, displacing Larry Myricks, who had previously occupied third place with 8.33 m behind Carl Lewis and Robert Emmijan. Evangelisti was therefore initially awarded the bronze medal.
Computer evaluations, including by the German Helmar Hommel , showed in retrospect that Evangelisti's last jump could have been a maximum of 7.80 m, so that the judges made a conscious wrong decision in favor of their compatriot Evangelisti. Evangelisti, who was probably not involved, was subsequently ranked fourth with his real best jump of 8.19 m, while Myricks received the bronze medal.

A modified spear was used for the first time at the World Championships in 1986. By shifting the center of gravity forward with the new spear, a) the problems with measuring - due to the flat angle of impact of the old spear models - as well as b) the difficulties due to the ever larger distances achieved were eliminated.

Final: September 6, 1987
In this competition, there was a doping case:
a member of the first sixth-placed Canadian 4 x 100-meter relay was Angella Issajenko , former Angella Taylor, who was involved in doping case Ben Johnson. She then received a suspension, among other things, her results achieved over 100 meters at these World Championships (initially fifth) and with the 4 x 100 meter relay were canceled.
