The men's 400-meter hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held from August 30 to September 1, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .
In this competition, the US hurdlers achieved a double success. In one of the most exciting finals at world championships ever, the defending champion won, two-time Olympic champion ( 1976 / 1984 ) and world record holder Edwin Moses with a new WM -record in 47.46 s. Just two hundredths of a second after him, the 1984 Olympic runner-up Danny Harris won the silver medal. Bronze went to the three-time European champion ( 1978 / 1982 / 1986 ), Olympic bronze medalists from 1984 and Vice World Champion from 1983 Harald Schmid from the Federal Republic of Germany , which at the same time came up with Harris to the finish and equaled his own European record.
