The men's 5000-meter race at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held on September 4 and 6, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .
World champion was the Moroccan Olympic champion from 1984 and world record holder Saïd Aouita , who had also won the bronze medal over 1500 meters in 1983 . He won ahead of the Portuguese Domingos Castro . Bronze went to the reigning European champion Jack Buckner from Great Britain .

Record improvement
The Kenyan John Ngugi , who was twelfth in the later finals, improved the existing World Championship record in the second run on September 4 by 5.85 seconds to 13: 22.68 minutes.
