The men's pole vault at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held from August 5 to 7, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .

In this competition, the pole vaulters from the Soviet Union won two medals, gold and bronze. World champion became the defending champion and world record holder Serhij Bubka . He won Thierry Vigneron ahead of the 1984 French Olympic third party . Bronze went to Rodion Gataullin .

Record improvement

World champion Serhij Bubka from the Soviet Union improved his own world championship record in the final on September 5 by fifteen centimeters to 5.85 m.

24 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 5.55 m. Five athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the next placed athletes (highlighted in light green) to a minimum of twelve jumpers. Four jumpers had mastered 5.5 m in places six to nine. Ranks ten to fourteen were occupied by five other athletes with skipped 5.40 m, who were also admitted to the final - with at least twelve athletes.
