The men's 200-meter run at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held on September 1 and 3, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .
World champion was the American title holder Calvin Smith , who also 1984 Olympic gold and 1983 World Cup -Gold with the US sprint relay won and 1983 runner-up over 100 meters had become. He won after the final photo decision before the Frenchman Gilles Quenéhervé at the same time . Bronze went to the Briton John Regis , who was just two hundredths of a second behind, too.
