The women's high jump at the 1987 World Athletics Championships took place on August 29 and 30, 1987 in Rome , Italy .
24 athletes from 19 countries took part in the competition. The gold medal was won by the reigning European champion Stefka Kostadinowa from Bulgaria , who increased her own world record by one centimeter to 2.09 m with her victory jump. Silver went to the defending champion and EC runner-up in 1982, Tamara Bykowa from the Soviet Union , with a height of 2.04 m . The bronze medal was won by the GDR athlete Susanne Beyer , formerly Susanne Helm, with 1.99 m.

Record improvement
World champion Stefka Kostadinova from Bulgaria improved the existing World Cup record in the final on August 30th by eight centimeters to 2.09 m, which at the same time increased her own world record by one centimeter.
qualification
August 29, 1987
24 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 1.93 m. After exactly twelve high jumpers had jumped the height of 1.91 m (highlighted in light green) and all others had dropped out, the qualification could be ended. The twelve athletes scheduled for participation in the finals had been found, there was no need to further differentiate. No athlete even had to approach the actual level of qualification.
