The U20 world record was broken by 18-year-old Yaroslav Mahutschich , Ukraine , by three centimeters.

qualification

The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualification height required for direct entry into the final was 1.94 m. Since only seven jumpers jumped this height - highlighted in light blue, the final field was filled with the following best jumpers from both groups to a total of twelve participants - highlighted in light green.
