The Khalifa International Stadium ( Arabic استاد خليفة الدولي, DMG Istād Ḫalīfa ad-duwalī ) in ar-Rayyan west of Qatar's capital Doha is the national stadium of the Qatari national soccer team . It opened in 1976 with 20,000 seats and held a total of 50,000 spectators until the renovation in 2014. The soccer stadium with an athletics facility is part of a 250 hectare sports area called the Aspire Zone . This site includes z. B. the Aspire Dome ; the largest indoor sports facility in the world, the Aspire Academy , the Hamad Aquatic Center swimming stadium and the 318 meter high Aspire Tower .
The arena was the main sports venue of the Asian Games in 2006 , where the opening and closing ceremonies of the games took place. In 2011, the Asian Football Championship took place in Qatar, where the Khalifa International Stadium was one of five venues. The national soccer teams of England and Brazil met on November 14, 2009 for a friendly in Doha. The Brazilians won 1-0 with a goal from Nilmar in the 47th minute.
The stadium was rebuilt from 2014 to May 2017, reducing the capacity to 40,000 spectators. In 2019 the World Athletics Championships were held at the Khalifa International Stadium. The air in the stadium can be cooled to between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius with an air conditioning system .
Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup and the Khalifa International Stadium is a planned venue.
