The Al-Ahli Stadium is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Qatari capital Doha . It has a capacity of 20,000 spectators. The main user of the stadium is the football club Al-Ahli SC , which plays its home games there.

history

The stadium was one of the two venues for the Asian Cup in 1988 . In addition to the opening game on December 2, 1988 between Qatar and Iran , eleven other games took place in the Al-Ahli Stadium. These included the game for third place and the final between South Korea and Saudi Arabia , which the Arabs won 4-3 on penalties .

On October 28, 1993, the stadium was the venue for the international soccer qualification match for the 1994 World Cup between Japan and Iraq . The encounter went down in Japanese football history as the "Shame of Doha" because the game ended 2-2 and the Japanese selection missed participation in the upcoming World Cup.

In 2011, 23 years after the Asian Cup in 1988, the Asian Cup was played again in Qatar. However, the Al-Ahli Stadium was not taken into account.
