The Suphachalasai Stadium (also: National Stadium, Thai : สนาม ศุภ ชลาศัย กรีฑาสถาน แห่ง ชาติ , RTGS : Sanam Suphachalasai krithasathan haeng chat ; lit .: "National Stadium Suphachalasai Field"; English National Stadium or Suphachalasai Stadium ) is a multifunctional stadium in the thai capital bangkok . Located on Rama I Road in the Pathum Wan district , the stadium is used for both athletics and football matches. The finals of the Thai soccer cup and league cup have been held here every year since 2009 .

Surname

The stadium is named after the sea captain Luang Suphachalasai (Bung Suphachalasai; 1895-1965). The naval officer was a member of the " People's Party " ( khana ratsadon ) that carried out the coup in 1932 that ended the absolute monarchy in what was then Siam. He was one of the leaders of the 1933 coup , which was supposed to defend constitutionalism against the royalists, but also secured the rule of the military wing of the People's Party.

history

The 21,000-seat stadium opened in 1935, the first in Thailand to host soccer games. Currently it is used almost exclusively for soccer games, especially the home games of Chonburi FC in the AFC continental competitions . At the 2004 Women's U-19 Football World Cup , the Suphachalasai Stadium was one of the main venues, where two semi-finals and two quarter-finals took place. At the soccer Asian Cup 2007 , a group game of group A (Oman - Iraq) was played in the stadium.

In 1966 , 1970 and 1978 it served as the main stadium for the Asian Games . In 1959, 1967, 1975, 1985 the Southeast Asian Games were played in the stadium. The stadium was the country's national stadium until the completion of the Rajamangala Stadium in 1998. The National Stadium stop of the Bangkok Skytrain is right next to the stadium .

Right next to the stadium is the smaller Thephasadin Stadium where BEC-Tero Sasana plays its home games of the Thai League .
