The Zayed Sports City Stadium ( Arabic ستاد مدينة زايد الرياضية; English Zayed Sports City Stadium ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in Abu Dhabi , the capital of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi , United Arab Emirates . It is the home ground of the United Arab Emirates national football team . There is no football club that regularly uses the stadium.
history
The stadium was opened in 1980 when it offered 60,000 seats. After a few renovations, there are now only 43,000 places available. Despite this, it is still the largest stadium in the country. The sports facility is located just outside the city center in the southeast of Abu Dhabi. It forms the center of the Zayed Sports City complex. Here is also the headquarters of the national football association, the United Arab Emirates Football Association and the national football team of the United Arab Emirates.
In 1996, Asian soccer matches were played on the facility . In 2003, several matches of the Junior World Cup took place here, including the final between Spain and Brazil . The Zayed Sports City Stadium was also one of the two venues for the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup . For this purpose, extensive renovation work was carried out in 2009. In 2017 the FIFA Club World Cup returned to the stadium. The stadium was also used for the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2019 Asian Cup .
