The Chonburi FC ( Thai : สโมสร ฟุตบอล ชลบุรี ) is a professional Thai football club in Chonburi , in the Thai League , the highest Thai league plays. Founded in 2002, the club is one of the youngest in the Thai League.

Club history

Foundation and first successes

Although the club was officially founded in 2002, it already existed under the name Chonburi-Sannibat-Samutprakan FC after entering into a cooperation with Sannibat-Samutprakan FC. In 2002 they separated from Sannibat-Samutprakan. In 2002, the club joined as Chonburi FC Code Red , the Thailand Provincial League in. The club was nicknamed "The Sharks" (Thai: ฉลาม ชล ; German: "Die Haie"). In the very first year Chonburi was runner-up in the Pro League and was able to confirm the success with third place a year later. In 2005 they won the Thailand Provincial League and rose to the Thailand Premier League together with the runner-up FC Suphanburi . In the first year they managed to keep the class and finished the season as 8th of 12 teams.

In 2006 they received an invitation to the Singapore Cup and reached the final. On the way there you defeated the local teams Albirex Niigata , Balestier Khalsa and Home United . In the final, despite a 2-0 lead, the Tampines Rovers were beaten 3-2 after extra time . Also for 2007 they received an invitation to the Singapore Cup, but failed in the first round because of Balestier Khalsa.

Championship and Champions League

In November 2007 they celebrated the first championship in the club's history. With a nine point lead they finished first in front of FC Krung Thai Bank . FC Chonburi was the first team in Thailand to become champions and not come from Bangkok or belong to a state or military institution. Coach Jadet Meelarp has played a large part in these successes. He took over the team from Witthaya Laohakul at the beginning of the 2007 season and led the team straight to the championship. Jadet Meelarp was previously active in youth work and in scouting for the club. He discovered Nataphorn Phanrit, Nattapong Samana and Kosin Hathairattanakool , among others, and formed them into national players.

The 2007 championship qualified Chonburi FC to participate in the 2008 AFC Champions League . It was the club's first participation in a continental competition. In preparation for the Champions League, the German soccer coach Björn Kliem (at that time still a medical student) was hired, who, with the support of his colleague Moamer Brkic, prepared the professional team physically and especially tactically for the difficult tasks. One was drawn into a group with Gamba Osaka (Japan), the eventual winner of the Champions League, Melbourne Victory (Australia) and the Chunnam Dragons from South Korea . Chonburi was considered a blatant outsider in the group. Due to the tactically excellent performance, Chonburi was able to hold the lead for a long time in the first game against Gamba Osaka and only conceded the equalizer in injury time. In the following home game against Melbourne in front of 10,000 spectators at the Suphachalasai Stadium even a 3-1 success was achieved. In the first encounter with the Chunnam Dragons they lost 0: 1 with a goal in stoppage time. The second legs were anything but happy. Although they scored one point in the second leg against the Chunnam Dragons, they had to admit defeat to Gamba Osaka and Melbourne Victory and were last with 5 points.

Vice championship and AFC Cup

Group game against Kedah FA , 2009

In July 2008, Chonburi FC took another major step into the future. The previous secondary sponsor, Hemaraj Land and Development PLC, signed a main sponsorship agreement which will come into effect in 2009. The contract is to run for 3 years and amounts to 18 million Baht (about 350,000 euros). In fact, this is likely to be the largest sponsorship deal ever signed by a Thai football club.

At the end of the 2008 season it was only enough for runner-up. The main reason for this was certainly the lack of exploitation of opportunities. Two game days before the end of the season they were still in first place in the table, but a 0-0 win against FC Samut Songkhram on the penultimate game day ruined the dream of defending their title. Jadet Meelarp was released. His successor was officially announced in mid-December 2008. Kiatisuk Senamuang , known as Zico , became Chonburi’s new coach.

As runner-up in 2008 they qualified for the AFC Cup 2009 and were drawn into a group with Hà Nội ACB (Vietnam), Eastern AA (Hong Kong) and Kedah FA (Malaysia). Chonburi has clearly set itself the goal of winning the group and bringing the AFC Cup to Thailand. The group stage was survived sovereign with only one defeat in 6 games. In the second round, Chonburi defeated PSMS Medan from Indonesia 4-1, before being eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Vietnamese representative FC Binh Duong 2-4 . The game against Medan was also the last game of Surat Sukha , who moved to Melbourne Victory in July 2009 . At the end of the 2009 season, the club was again only the runner-up. In 2008 they were 2 points behind the champions, in 2009 they were 3 points. Kiatisuk Senamuang moved at the end of the season to Hoàng Anh Gia Lai, the club in Vietnam where he was last active as a player. His successor at FC Chonburi was Jedet Meelarp, who had been sacked a year earlier. At his side was his former boss Witthaya Laohakul as technical director of the association. In contrast to other top clubs in the league, Chonburi had hardly any significant commitments for the 2010 season. Only Therdsak Chaiman can be classified in this category. The 36-year-old last made his comeback in the Thai national soccer team and moved from Singapore to Chonburi. Although the club was runner-up again, this did not automatically entitle them to participate in the 2010 AFC Cup in the 2009 season . Instead, Thailand's cup winners qualified directly for the competition. FC Chonburi was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Thai FA Cup .

Stadion

Chonburi Stadium

The club has been playing its home games at the Chonburi Stadium (Thai: ชลบุรี ส เต เดีย ม หรือ สนาม อบ จ. ชลบุรี), also known as Chonburi Municipality Stadium, in Chonburi in the Chonburi province of the same name since 2011 . The multi-purpose stadium has a capacity of 8,680 seats. The stadium is owned by the Chon Buri Provincial Administration Organization . For a long time the club played in the 5,000-seat Chonburi Municipality Stadium (Thai: สนาม กีฬา เทศบาล เมือง ชลบุรี ) in Chonburi. Due to disagreements with the local authorities, the club played its home games from 2008 in the stadium of the Assumption School Si Racha. For the games of the AFC Champions League 2008 one had to move to the Suphachalasai stadium in Bangkok , which was also used for the games in the AFC Cup 2009 . For the 2010 season, the club returned to Chonburi and played briefly in the renovated Chonburi Sports College Stadium.

Fans

Chonburi FC fans, 2008

Chonburi FC fans are generally considered very crazy. Dressed in blue, with a jersey, flags and scarves, you can attend your club's games. Firecrackers, rockets and Bengal fires are mostly ignited during the games.

The club is enjoying increasing popularity not only with the Thais themselves. A lot of foreigners live and work in the Chonburi region, so FC Chonburi is a kind of substitute club for you. For example, there is a four-person German fan group (4SUPS Chonburi) who live in Thailand. In the 2004/05 season in which they won the Thailand Provincial League , an average of 250 spectators came to the games. In the decisive final game of the season against FC Nakhon Ratchasima , 15 Chonburi fans found their way to northern Thailand. In the first Premier League seasons, the average was 2,000 to 3,000 spectators, but now up to 5,000 spectators flock to the stadium for home games. At away games there are usually still 200 to 300 fans who accompany their team. In the meantime, precisely and because of the good performances in the AFC Champions League , many fans from Bangkok and the rest of Thailand have joined them. 10,000 visitors came to the stadium for the 2008 AFC Champions League game against Melbourne Victory . 5,000 of them from the Chonburi region alone, who made the one-hour journey to Bangkok . For Thai standards, these are unbelievable numbers. The decisive game for the 2007 championship was also attended by 10,000 spectators. In general, the number of viewers has increased significantly compared to previous years. At away games there are usually still 200 to 300 fans who accompany their team.
