Si Racha ( Thai : ศรีราชา , pronunciation: [ sǐː raːt͡ɕʰaː ], also written Sriracha or Sriraja ) is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Si Racha in the province of Chonburi . The Chonburi Province is located in the eastern region of central Thailand .
The city ( Thesaban Mueang ) Si Racha has about 19,440 inhabitants (2007). However, this only includes the city center, not the densely populated surrounding area.
geography
Si Racha is located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand , about 80 kilometers (as the crow flies) southeast of the capital Bangkok , halfway between Chon Buri and Pattaya .
economy
The commercial port in Laem Chabang , which was newly built in the 1990s , together with the Thaioil refinery, is one of the most important economic factors for Si Racha County.
The city of Si Racha is known for its seafood , which is usually served with a hot chili sauce, the nam phrik si racha (Thai: น้ำพริก ศรีราชา ). Chili sauces with the name Sriracha sauce are now sold internationally and do not always come from here.
traffic
The modern eight-lane Bangkok-Chonburi Motorway connects both the coastal cities in the east (Eastern Seaboard) with Bangkok and with U-Tapao Airport, the only airport in Thailand with direct flights to the south of the country without the detour via Bangkok. The older Thanon Sukhumvit (Sukhumvit Street) runs through the city of Si Racha to Chonburi and Pattaya, but is often at risk of congestion due to the heavy traffic.
history
In 1945 Si Racha got the status of a small town ( Thesaban Tambon ). In 1955 it was promoted to a city ( Thesaban Mueang ).
Attractions
Most of the boats go to Ko Sichang Island ( เกาะ สี ชัง ) from here.
North of the city is the temple Wat Ko Loi on the island of the same name (Ko Loi - เกาะ ลอย ). The island is connected to the mainland by a 1.5 kilometer long road . The temple combines Thai Buddhism and Chinese contemplation and also shows a Buddha's footprint . Next to the entrance to the Wat Ko Loi temple is the Ko Loi Park.
The main attraction is probably the Si Racha Tiger Zoo, which shows more than 400 Bengal tigers and other animals. In October 2004, tigers at the zoo showed signs of H5N1 avian flu and were infected with the H5N1 influenza A virus . They were probably fed infected chickens. More than 80 other tigers were killed as a precaution.
Sports
The local club is FC Sriracha , which plays its home games in the Suzuki stadium. The stadium was completed in the first construction phase at the end of 2009. In the second construction phase, the stadium received a main stand made of concrete. The stadium is located directly opposite Ko Loi Park.
