In the group stage, 28 teams played in seven groups with four teams each in league mode (first and second leg). The teams were divided according to geographical aspects. Teams from West and Central Asia played in groups A to D, teams from East and Southeast Asia competed in groups E to G. In addition to Urawa Red Diamonds, the defending champion of the previous edition, who does not take part in the group stage, the seven group winners qualified for the quarter-finals.

The tournament was played with the three-point rule .

Final round

The quarter-finals were drawn, but it was not possible for two teams from the same country to meet directly. The teams played the tournament winner in the knockout system with a return game, whereby the away goals rule applied. If no winner had been determined in the second leg and / or final after regular playing time and extra time, the winner would have been determined on penalties .
