The Chālid-ibn-al-Walīd Stadium ( Arabic ملعب خالد بن الوليد) Is a football stadium with athletics track in Syrian Homs in the same province . The stadium is the home of the two clubs al-Karama and al-Wathba SC , both of which play in the country's top league . It was opened in 1960 and seats 32,000 people. The stadium was named after Chālid ibn al-Walīd , a companion of Muhammad .

history

The stadium was opened in 1960 as a simple football field. In 1967 a small grandstand was built for 2,000 spectators. In 1980 the facility had a place made of artificial turf , four floodlight masts and a capacity of 12,000 places. In 2002 the artificial turf was replaced by natural turf for 25 million SYP and the stadium completely renovated and expanded to its current size of 32,000 seats.

In November 2006 the final second leg of the AFC Champions League between al-Karama and the South Korean club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors took place in the soccer stadium . The Syrians lost the first leg at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium in Jeonju 2-0, and prevailed 2-1 in the second leg.

As a result of the civil war in the country , the facility could not be used for three years. The first game after that took place on June 23, 2014 as part of the national cup competition , which al-Karama won 10-0.
