The Seongnam Stadium is a football stadium with athletics track in the South Korean Seongnam in the province of Gyeonggi . From 1999 to 2004 it was the home of Seongnam FC (then still Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma ), which at that time played in the country's top division . It was opened in 1984 and seats 25,000.

history

The stadium was built from September 1, 1976 to December 31, 1984 and had a capacity of 25,000 seats upon completion. The Seongnam city administration took over the financing . After the 1988 Summer Olympics were awarded to the South Korean capital Seoul in September 1981, the Hyochang Stadium in Seoul and the Seongnam Stadium were initially set as venues for the hockey competitions .

After the World Hockey Federation FIH objected to the plans, it was decided to hold the hockey competitions alone in the Seongnam Stadium. To this end, from April 8 to June 6, 1985, another playing field and a small grandstand for 2,000 spectators were built next to the stadium. In the finals, the United Kingdom won 3-1 against Germany and Australia 2-0 against the hosts from South Korea .

After Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma moved from Cheonan to Seongnam for the 2000 season , Seongnam Stadium served the club as a home for four years. In December 2004 the final second leg of the AFC Champions League between Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma and the Saudi Arabian club Ittihad FC took place there. The South Koreans won the first leg at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium in Jeddah 3-1, but the second leg was then lost 5-0. For the following season , the club moved within Seongnam to the southwest Tancheon Stadium .

In November 2009, the venue hosted the Korean FA Cup final between Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma and Suwon Samsung Bluewings , which the home team lost on penalties .
