history

Planning for the Seoul Olympic Park began in February 1983. The purchase of the land and construction of the buildings was the responsibility of the City of Seoul , while the financing was the responsibility of the SLOOC . A design competition was announced that included the sports facilities for fencing, weightlifting, cycling, swimming and gymnastics, as well as the reconstruction of an ancient mud wall, the creation of a lake and green spaces. Furthermore, an Olympic Center, the National Sports University and Seoul Sports School should be integrated into the design. However, the competition did not produce a satisfactory result. Therefore, in September 1983, the Environmental Planning Institute of the Seoul National University was commissioned with the planning. At the same time, a committee was set up to pursue the same goal. In March 1984 the concept for the Olympic Park was ready.

The open space next to the Peace Gate in Olympic Park is regularly used for extraordinary events. In autumn 2005 the United Buddy Bears exhibition - coming from Berlin - was presented here at the invitation of the city of Seoul . For the first time in 60 years, unique pieces of art from South and North Korea, designed by artists from the respective parts of the country, could stand peacefully next to each other.
