The Seoul Olympic Stadium (in Hangeul : 서울 올림픽 주 경기장 , in Hanja : 서울 奧林匹克 主 竞技场 ) in the South Korean capital Seoul is a football stadium with an athletics facility located in the southwest of the city's Songpa-gu district and part of the Jamsil sports complex .

history

The Olympic Stadium was built mainly for the 1988 Summer Olympics . The athletics competitions of the games were held there. At that time the stadium had a capacity of 100,000 seats. The architect of the stadium was Kim Swoo Geun . The silhouette of the stadium is said to symbolize vases from the Joseon Dynasty .

Today the stadium has seats for almost 70,000 spectators and is struggling to assert itself against the stadiums that were newly built for the 2002 World Cup .
