At the IV Olympic Games in London in 1908 , the soccer tournament was not held for the first time with club teams, but with national teams, making it the first official Olympic soccer tournament. The competition was organized by the English football association FA .

All games were played between October 19 and 24 in the British capital, London . The venue was the White City Stadium . A total of eight teams had registered for the competition. In addition to the English amateur national team , which competed under the name Great Britain , Bohemia , Hungary , Sweden , Denmark and the Netherlands reported one team each, and France even two.

After the quarter-finals had already been drawn, Bohemia and Hungary had to withdraw their participation, as the Viennese government objected to the participation of the two dependent areas as independent teams. As a result, the Netherlands and France I advanced to the semi-finals without a fight. The Danes meanwhile outclassed the second French team 9-0, while the English selection gave the Swedes no chance and made it safely to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, Denmark impressively underpinned its position as the strongest continental European team with a 17-1 victory over France I. Danish top scorer Sophus Nielsen scored ten of his eleven goals in this game, and for France this defeat is the highest of the national team to this day. Meanwhile, the English team easily prevailed against the Netherlands. In the end, the island team won 4-0.

Since the French withdrew their first team after the debacle against Denmark and were subsequently excluded, Sweden was nominated for the game for third place against the Netherlands. The Swedes were defeated by the Dutch with 0: 2, who were able to secure the bronze medal.

In the final in front of 8,000 spectators, the Danes were mostly equal to the English, but goals from Frederick Chapman (20th) and Vivian Woodward (46th) ultimately won the hosts and favorites 2-0.
